What Diamond Clarity Is Best?

The clarity of a diamond is measured by the amount of imperfections that it has on the surface and internally. Geologists and jewelers use the Clarity Scale to rate diamonds, which determines price. These imperfections are called inclusions, and they happen when the diamond is formed deep in the earth. It's important to note that the majority of diamonds have some kind of flaw, and that many of these flaws are hardly visible to the naked eye.

The Diamond Clarity Scale

This scale has 6 categories that range from I (Included), to FL (Flawless). Included means that there are flaws that are clearly visible under 10x magnification that can affect the diamond's brilliance and overall clarity. Flawless means that the diamond is perfect and that there are no imperfections. Read on to learn about what's in between, and what diamond clarity really is the best?

I (Included):

Included means that the diamond has flaws that are obvious under 10x magnification that can affect its transparency and brilliance. Within this category there are three subcategories: I1, I2, and I3. I3 will have more inclusions than I2 and I1, and will be the least expensive option on the Clarity Scale. Subcategories will work the same for each subsequent rating.

SI (Slightly Included):

Slightly Included means that the diamond has inclusions noticeable under 10x magnification. This rating has two subcategories: SI1, and SI2.

VS (Very Slightly Included):

Very Slightly Included means that the diamond has inclusions that take some effort to be seen under 10x magnification, but can be characterized as minor. This rating has two subcategories: VS1, and VS2.

VVS (Very Very Slightly Included):

Very Very Slightly Included means that the diamond has inclusions that are so insignificant that it's difficult for even a skilled grader to see them under 10x magnification. This rating has two subcategories: VVS1, and VVS2.

IF (Internally Flawless):

Internally Flawless means that the diamond has absolutely no inclusions visible under 10x magnification.

FL (Flawless):

Flawless means that the diamond has no inclusions and no blemishes visible under 10x magnification. A flawless diamond is extremely rare.

Conclusion

What diamond clarity is best? It really depends on what you're looking for in a diamond, and how much you want to spend. If you're looking for a crystal clear stone that shines with every facet and you have a large budget, then VVS1 or IF may be the clarity for you. If you want a diamond that has some character and/or you have a smaller budget, then I thought VS may be the clarity for you.
