Deconstructing the 4 C’s of Diamond Grading: Carat Weight

When most people think of buying Diamonds, carat weight is what they think of first. In fact, many people think the higher the carat weight, the better. Unfortunately this isn’t always true, as very flawed and off-color stones can have a high carat weight and cost far less than a nearly flawless stone with a lower carat weight.

Carat weight got its name from the carob seed, which used to be used as a guide to tell how big a Diamond was. Today, we don’t use carob seeds to measure carat weight anymore, but we still use the term carat. Each metric carat is the equivalent of 200 milligrams and 100 points. The purpose of this is to ensure the weight of the Diamond is as precise as possible.
